"There are abundance of strugglers of all nations in Mergee", wrote an English man in 1688.
Myeik as it is now can be approach by road from Yangon. The road passes through Mawlamyaing and Dawei. 155 miles stretch between Dawei and Myeik, where goes over the Tanintharyi range opens to some of the loveliest vistas in the world. It also served by air. However, the approach by sea is the most romantic because that was the way of privateers over three hundred years ago.
After a delightful night voyage on a sea smooth as a mirror after the south-west monsoon has drith drawn at the end of September, you come ath-wart Tanintharyi Island with tall tropical trees and lush undergrowth on its eight hundredth feet high slope.
Maurice Collin writes "Under the pale blue sky and intense sun, the island has a forlorn beauty".
Tanintharyi is one of the eight hundred and ten islands of the Myeik Archipelagoes which rein from Mali Island in the north to Zardetgyi Island south-west of Bayin naung Point (Victoria Point) in Kawthaung, Myanmar's Lands End.
Sailing forty miles to the east brings to Katan Island with its range of peals. The sea here is dotted with islands and surrounded by wooded heights, gleaming beaches and waves breaking on rocks.
Looking eastward you sea the mainland, a littoral of mangroves and then against the horizon, range upon range of mountains up to seven thousand feet high the Tanintharyi Yoma.
As the boat turner to star-board, it enters the inner water which leads to Myeik.
Nature provides a convenience haven here. Eight hundreds yards out from Myeik Town is Patet Island. At water's edge is a huge image of Buddha in the recline mode.
